Change
Let’s talk about change!
Friends often ask me what are the most common issues that bring people to counselling. They are often surprised when I can sum it up in one word ‘CHANGE’. Their expectation is that I will say stress, anxiety, depression or bereavement. But fundamentally at the core of any client I have worked with, change is at the heart of what they want, whether it be their feelings or their behaviours.
Change can be something we crave the most but the hardest thing to achieve, especially if feelings and behaviours are life long held beliefs. Change can be difficult even when we want to change something, we tend to cling to our ‘old ways’ as they are familiar and feel safe. Doing something new can be unfamiliar and frightening, so we plod on in an unhappy comfort zone.
Successful change is brought about by taking small and consistent steps and not berating yourself when you have a setback. Change is a slow process and can be confusing. Connor McGregor has a fantastic saying ‘Win or learn’ what a brilliant outlook to have, if you don’t win or achieve something the first time around, learn where you went wrong and make improvements and maybe you’ll achieve something greater!
Counselling is a safe place to explore how you feel and to bring about greater understanding. I firmly believe it is the greatest of investments a person can make in themselves.
